Quectel Wireless Solutions, a global provider of IoT solutions, has announced its next-generation Wi-SUN module KCM0A5S, specifically developed for smart cities, metering systems, industrial automation, and agricultural applications.
Built on the Silicon Labs EFR32FG25 chipset, the module features an ARM Cortex-M33 processor, 256 KB RAM, and 2 MB Flash memory. Fully compliant with the Wi-SUN FAN 1.1 protocol, the KCM0A5S operates across the 470–928 MHz frequency range and delivers stable and secure long-range data communication through its IPv6-based mesh network architecture. This makes it particularly well suited for smart city infrastructures where thousands of devices must interconnect efficiently and reliably.
The KCM0A5S supports multiple system roles—including router, leaf (end node), and border router—allowing seamless integration into diverse network architectures. It can also operate in RCP (Radio Co-Processor) mode alongside Linux-based systems, offering flexible deployment options. With its compact dimensions (28.0 mm × 22.0 mm × 3.15 mm), wide operating temperature range (-40 °C to +85 °C), and transmit power of up to 30 dBm, the module is well suited for industrial-grade applications in harsh environments.
Commenting on the launch, Delbert Sun, Vice President of the Product Department at Quectel, stated:
“Wi-SUN provides significant advantages for IoT devices thanks to its low power consumption, strong security, and wide coverage. Our KCM0A5S module combines these strengths with high bandwidth and low latency, giving developers greater flexibility and performance.”
Wi-SUN technology is rapidly gaining adoption in infrastructure applications such as street lighting, smart metering, and parking management. In a project deployed in London, a real-time remote control system has been established using 15,000 Wi-SUN devices and 12 border routers, demonstrating the scalability of the technology as part of the city’s digital transformation.
With its long product lifecycle, backward compatibility across versions, and robust signal performance, the KCM0A5S offers a reliable, future-ready solution for smart city and industrial IoT deployments.
