Hexasense has become one of Turkey’s pioneering smart agriculture projects by integrating IoT, big data, and artificial intelligence into a plug-and-play system based on NB-IoT (4G). Developed by Empa R&D, the system enables real-time monitoring of beehives, increasing productivity, protecting nature, and simplifying the beekeeper’s work. Our vision is to bring technology to the field, empower producers, and contribute to national development. With Hexasense, every sensor becomes the voice of the soil and the bees, and every data point represents a step forward in sustainable agriculture.
Hexasense collects temperature, humidity, motion, and sound data from hives. Based on this information, it provides early warnings to maintain colony health and productivity before potential problems arise. Hive tracking is possible in case of theft. The system can be monitored remotely and offers at least one year of battery life.
With this system, beekeepers can manage their hives remotely, researchers can continuously collect data from the field, and hobbyist beekeepers can check their hives anytime. All data is accessible in real time via mobile and web applications.
According to TÜİK 2024 data, Turkey has approximately 100,000 beekeeping enterprises and around 9 million hives. The average yield is 10.7 kg per hive, significantly below the world average. Hexasense is designed to improve this situation, aiming for healthier colonies, higher production, and a stronger ecosystem.
The system provides infrastructure for future applications, including swarm tracking, species-specific behavior analysis, geographic classification, big data utilization, collaborations with academia, and more.
